Grassroots clubs and series sustain Columbus running scene
Local organizers and more than 20 clubs keep a steady calendar of events that draw thousands of participants each year.
How we reported this
Columbus runners rely on neighborhood clubs and a 12-event series to maintain year-round races from 5K to marathon distance. The Short North Running Club and German Village Running Club set regular group runs, while Columbus Running Company locations in Clintonville, Pickerington and Grove City handle logistics for multiple events.
The community-driven model matters because it keeps participation steady without relying on one-off national promotions. Organizers schedule races across seasons, giving residents repeated opportunities to train and compete close to home.
Clubs anchor weekly activity
More than 20 running clubs operate on fixed schedules throughout the city. Participants meet in established neighborhoods and use Columbus Running Company storefronts as hubs for training plans and event registration. This network turns individual workouts into consistent group activity across Clintonville, Pickerington and Grove City.
Numbers show sustained reach
The RUNColumbus Race Series lists 12 annual events, including the Fantastic Frigid 5K in January, the Ohio State 4 Miler in April and the Columbus Hungry Turkey Trot in November. The Columbus Running Company manages the Hilltop U.S.A. 5K scheduled for July 4, 2026. In 2024 the OhioHealth CapCity Half Marathon drew over 18,000 athletes across the marathon and half-marathon weekend and earned a number-two national ranking from USAToday 10Best. Post-race celebrations for the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon and Columbus Promise 5K take place at Columbus Commons on April 25.
